What is the Specialist Michael C. Aper Scholarship?

Each year, a Florida ROTC High School senior female student can apply for the Specialist Michael C. Aper Scholarship.  The ROTC student must exemplify the character and dedication Specialist Aper demonstrated as a Team Leader with the 3rd platoon, Alpha Company, while serving as an Army Infantryman.  At a young age, 21, Michael was entrusted with a type of responsibility not known to many people on this planet.  He was faced with split-second, life-and-death decisions while serving in Afghanistan and responsible for the discipline and well-being of 25 soldiers in the platoon.  Younger soldiers regarded Michael as a role-model and shining example of physical fitness, intelligence, focus, and professionalism.  Michael earned two Army Commendation Medals for demonstrating acts of heroism, meritorious service, and bravery when he rescued fellow soldiers.  After an honorable discharge from the Army, Michael is also recognized for saving the lives of two veterans at a VA domiciliary.   Michael went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree, with honors, from NAU and a Master’s degree from Wake Forest University where he was awarded the Student Achievement Award for his graduating class.
